Readiness checklist
Get contract-ready, step by step
Work through these at your own pace. We remember what you've checked off — even if you close the tab and come back later.
Register your business in SAM.gov
About 1–2 hoursThe official federal contractor registry. You'll get a free UEI (Unique Entity ID) — your business's ID for all government work. It's free; never pay a third party for it.
Go to SAM.gov →Confirm your NAICS code(s)
About 30 minutesYour NAICS code is how the government classifies what you sell. Pick the one (or few) that best match your business — you'll use these to search for contracts.
Look up NAICS codes →Check your small-business size standard
About 20 minutesEach NAICS code has a size limit (a revenue or employee cap). If you're under it, you count as a 'small business' and can compete for set-aside contracts.
Check size standards →Apply for any set-aside certifications you qualify for
About 2–3 hoursIf your quiz results matched you to a program (WOSB, SDVOSB, 8(a), HUBZone), apply through the SBA's official certification portal. This unlocks contracts reserved for businesses like yours.
Go to certify.sba.gov →Write a one-page capability statement
About half a dayA one-pager that tells an agency who you are, what you do, your key codes/certifications, and how to reach you. It's the contracting world's version of a resume.
See what to include →Find your first subcontracting opportunities
About 1 hourNew contractors often start as subcontractors to larger companies — it's a lower-risk way to build a track record. SBA SubNet lists these openings.
